清水芸妓 Shimizu Geigi

客船が清水港に寄港する際に、清水芸妓のみなさんに会うことができます。歓迎セレモニーで花束を贈呈したり、船内芸妓ステージを実施したりと大活躍です。ここで清水芸妓についてご紹介します。
Whenever cruise ships call to Shimizu Port, you can often see members of the Shimizu Geigi geisha troupe. Whether it's passing a flower bouquet at a welcome ceremony or performing in an onboard show, the members of Shimizu Geigi are very active whenever cruise ships call. Here we will introduce exactly what the Shimizu Geigi are.

清水芸妓は、静岡商工会議所の静岡伝統芸能振興会の運営事業です。静岡在住の女性たちを随時募集中です。清水芸妓に入団すると、約３ヶ月間の修行を経てお座敷またはステージデビューとなります。
The Shimizu Geigi geisha troupe is one effort of the Shizuoka Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Society, which itself is part of the Shizuoka Chamber of Commerce & Industry. They are always on the lookout for women who live in Shizuoka to join the troupe. Once a woman has joined and undergone approx. three months of training, they are ready to begin performing at events and onstage.

客船が初寄港するとき、歓迎セレモニーが開催されます。その際に、客船の乗員に清水芸妓の舞妓さんによる花束贈呈の場面を見ることができます。。客船の乗員はいつも大喜びで、セレモニーが終わった後もツーショットの写真撮影を要求してきます。
When a cruise ships calls for the first time to Shimizu Port, a welcome ceremony is held. During the ceremony, the maiko of Shimizu Geigi present flower bouquets to the executive officers. The officers are always very happy on this occasion, and often ask for photos together with the Shimizu Geigi after the ceremony has finished.

初寄港でなくても、清水芸妓のみなさんは日の出埠頭へ来てくれます。出港時間約２時間前に客船に乗船し、船内シアターで30分間のショーを開催します。
The Shimizu Geigi come to the pier even when ships call for the second time and beyond. About two hours before the ship's departure, they board and prep for 30 minutes. After that, it's time for a 30-minute show in the ship's theater.

ショーの30分間には３〜４曲を披露し、乗船客とお座敷遊びをする場面もあります。終了後には5分程度の写真撮影の時間も作ります。内容が盛り沢山で乗船客はいつも大喜びです。
In the show's 30 minutes, the Shimizu Geigi will typically perform 3-4 songs and play a game with passengers. After it's finished there is usually about five minutes for taking photos. There's lots of content in just a half hour, and passengers are always very pleased with the show!

　浪曲「清水次郎長伝」の名調子「旅～ゆけばぁ～」で知られる清水港。平成15年に静岡市と合併し、現在は静岡市清水区、Jリーグ「清水エスパルス」のホームタウンとしてもその名を知られています。特定重要港湾を擁す工業都市ですが、もともと「清水港」のスタートは街中をゆったり流れる巴川の河口から始まりました。当時の河口周辺は海運問屋が数多く立ち並び、まさに物流の拠点として大変なにぎわいを見せていました。芸妓さんを抱える「置屋」もこの地域に集中し、学区名の「清水」が花街の代名詞になっていました。

　ところが、明治22年(1889年)の東海道線の開通に伴い市内の様相が一変し、繁華街は巴川河口周辺から新設された「江尻駅」(旧「清水駅」)へ移り、それにつれて花街も巴川河口周辺から江尻方面へ移って行きました。その後戦災に見舞われ市街地は大打撃を受けましたが、戦災復興でにぎわう最中、昭和26年に全国でも珍しい「清水芸妓学校」が開校。開校式は「150人を上回る芸妓さんでごった返した。」と、いわれています。

   高度経済成長時代も終わりを告げる昭和40年代の後半になると、今まで続いた好景気の反動で商習慣も変化し、芸妓さんの活躍する機会も料亭も徐々に減っていきました。昭和48年(1973年)には、経済界の有志が「伝統ある花街の灯を消してはならない。」と芸妓さんの支援組織「清美会」(「静岡伝統芸能振興会」の前身)が発足しました。また、平成3年には経済界と芸妓衆の共同出資によって新人芸妓を社員として雇用する「清美(株)」も誕生し支援の輪は広がっていきました。しかし、急激に訪れた景気の低迷は花柳会をも深刻な状況に陥れ、平成16年(2004年)には芸妓会社は解散してしまいましたが、当時の社員芸妓も立派に育ち、今では一本さんとして立派に成長し、清水の花街を支えています。その後芸妓衆を取り巻く環境はますます厳しいものになっていきましたが、昔からの芸処としての伝統は芸妓衆によって頑なに守られ、「清水をどり」(平成10年をもって休止)や「春の舞」(平成21年をもって休止)、「春の宴」などを通して市民に披露してきました。最近では、清水港に入港する豪華客船への歓迎行事(花束贈呈やクルーズのお客様へ歓迎の舞披露)にも参加するなど観光振興にも大きな役割を担っています。 

Shimizu Port became known throughout Japan at the end of the 19th century via the tale of Jirocho, a local hero credited with helping the port develop in its early years. After merging with neighboring Shizuoka City in 2003, it is now Shimizu Ward, and is still the hometown of the J-1 soccer team Shimizu S-Pulse. Although Shimizu is now a specially designated port with a large industrial presence, it was originally just a small town along the gently flowing Tomoe River. Numerous maritime wholesalers lined the river, and Shimizu became a hub for distribution in the area. The name of the local school district, Shimizu, became synonymous with the pleasure quarter in which numerous geisha houses were clustered.

Shimizu was greatly transformed in 1899, with the opening of the Tokaido train line. The city center was moved from the mouth of the Tomoe River to the newly built Ejiri Station (formerly known as Shimizu Station), and the pleasure quarter went with it. Shimizu was heavily damaged during Allied firebombing in WWII, but came back stronger than ever during reconstruction. In 1951 the Shimizu Geigi School was opened, a rarity for its time in Japan. It is said that the school's opening ceremony was a wild event with over 150 geishas in attendance!

In the 1970s, as Japan's period of rapid economic development started to taper off and the nation's society underwent change, old-style Japanese restaurants started to close and geigi had fewer places to work. In 1973, local business leaders took up the call to preserve the traditional culture of the pleasure quarter, starting an organization to help foster geigi talent. Today, that organization has become the Shizuoka Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Society. In 1992, local business leaders and the geisha troupe made a joint investment, forming a company and hiring geigi as employees. Unfortunately, the bad economic environment of the time made it difficult for companies to hire geigi for parties, and in 2004 the company was dissolved. The employees at the time however, have continued their efforts and support of the Shimizu pleasure quarter. It has become ever harder to preserve the geigi traditions, but they have continued to perform new songs for the people of Shizuoka and Shimizu. In recent years, they have also played a major role in tourism-related activities, such as participating in cruise ship welcome ceremonies and performances.
